Chilika lake - Mangalajodi 2014 Pongal trip with MNS - eBird Trip Report

Chilika lake - Mangalajodi trip with MNS - eBird Trip Report

Srinivas' recent visit to Mangalajodi sent me down a memory rabbit hole, of our own January 2014 trip there.  I dug out my trip lists from bubo.org, and have moved then into e-bird.  Click on the link above to see the lists.  These lists were recorded on paper, and I do not have a day by day record.  Therefore, for each place, the list is a compilation of two visits.

Re-reading my old jottings I remembered Balugaon station and Barkul where we stayed in Pantnivas.

A group of 13  members of Madras Naturalists' Society, MNS, travelled to Chilika and Mangalajodi in January 2014.

I remember the trip for the magical rides in Mangalajodi with my first experience of Godwits, the Irrawaddy dolphins on our Chilika lake expeditions.  It was my first and so far only visit into Odisha.

Chilika lake with Nalaban island in the background.  The birds had arrived in plenty that year, and especially Nalaban island was a hotspot.  But for my beginner and untrained eyes, they were too far away for enjoyment, and I just enjoyed the vastness of the lagoon and the sunrise and sunsets.

Mangalajodi - a completely different experience of quietly drifting, like a proverbial lotus-eater. and enjoying birds up close.

I had Gayathree and Raji for laughter and giggles, Sekar always there to watch with amusement, and the trio of young boys to provide restlessness, energy and amusement.  Our son was away at Rishi Valley, and "escaped" being press-ganged into the trip.

Thank you Srinivas, for making me re-visit the terns and gulls, shelducks and pintails, and enjoy these pictures again.
