Day 30 is for balcony birding
Watercolour snapshots
The purple-rumped sunbird (Leptocoma zeylonica)
Unfailing midday chirps of the purple rumped sunbird. Sometimes there are 3 of them. Tiny trio but shrill calls. Delicate legs and sharp beaks.
The Purple rumped Sunbird could be named turquoise headed sunbird, if you ask me, but no one is asking me, that is a different point. Metallic green on the head and on the shoulder of the male. But no, the bird will be named for the little purple that is there on the rump, which you could easily miss.
These birdies have adapted to us humans and our gardens as is evident from its frequent visit to the hibiscus and tulsi plants on the balcony.
This is unlike the other sunbird - the purple sunbird - which seems more picky and is seen more in less disturbed habitats.I have not seen the purple subbed as yet near home.
