Day 41 - Cassia blooms I spy
My morning walk delight today. Cassia fistula - a late bloomer. Most trees in the neighbourhood had an April bloom - this year was particularly splendid.
But our lady here, she forgot to bloom then, and is showing her glorious colours now. Or maybe she wanted to standout, be separate from the herd, do her own thing.
Whatever the reason, I enjoyed standing under and staring at the garlands of yellow, falling sumptuously, and the bees and other insects, buzzing around in happiness.
This tree and flower deserves a festival; a festival of viewing. Like the Japanese and the cherry blossoms.
ChatGPT tells me that - "If you’ve noticed, in late-blooming years Cassia fistula’s show overlaps with Gulmohar (Delonix regia) instead of preceding it. That overlap is a good “citizen science” indicator of seasonal shifts. Cassia fistula times its blooms to the build-up of hot, dry conditions (and daylength). If March–April are cloudier/wetter and days stay moderate rather than very hot, the physiological switch to flower is delayed. The IMD/monthly reports + local news coverage of above-normal pre-monsoon rains in 2025 line up with the late flowering you observed."
Ah, I also saw two, somewhere around Adyar, those roads confuse me. But yes, what a joy they bring, and yes we should have festival of veiwing for this one..its splendid..to see a tree in full bloom
